HOLIDAY GIVING SERIES: THE RIVER CENTER
FAMILY & BEYOND
BY JESSICA CAMILLE AGUIRRE
Monadnock Ledger-Transcript
When Sean Powers first went to the River Center in Peterborough, he was going to get help with filing taxes. It was early 2008. Then, he found out that the center has a fuel assistance program. Soon he was enrolled in a parenting group, meeting with other parents once a week to discuss the challenges that he faced as a single father with a young son.
He’s been attending the meeting for two years now.
Power’s son Alden just turned three, and when his dad goes into the couch-lined and muted group room, he stays downstairs in the center’s childcare room to play with other kids. Powers, who has also been able to use the River Center’s employment resources, says that his son benefits from having the opportunity to interact socially with other children. And he benefits from the collective wisdom of fellow parents. Turn to FAMILY ................................
